SIRICILLA, Karimnagar District - October 27, 2009

Andhra Bank CMD R S Reddy said the remarkable achievement of women's cooperatives in Siricilla will serve as a model to others in the country.

Mr. R S Reddy who is also Chairman of A.P. State Level Bankers Committee, is all praise for the women of Sircilla for achieving economic turn around in the textile town, which hit headlines last year for the large number of suicides by weavers.

Taking part in the meeting of self help women's organizations of the town, Mr. Reddy described the achievements of the women cooperatives as "economic revolution" and said their success would be taken as a model to solve the problems in other distressed communities in the country.

The CMD said he was first apprehensive of the efficiency of the women's cooperatives when then Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhar Reddy asked him to "extend as much help as possible" to help them come out the crisis last year.

"Following the request by Dr Reddy, we finalized an economic plan of Total Financial Inclusion (TFI) in a bankers meeting to provide a total of Rs.61.73 Crore loans to 470 women's cooperatives of Sircilla, of which the share of Andhra Bank was Rs.22.81 Crore" he said.

The CMD said that he was amazed by the accomplishments of the cooperatives as the results were "well beyond" their expectations. The activities of these cooperatives in the last four five months have attracted the attention of nation. The "Sircilla Package" as the initiative is called, will serve as a model for the various places in the future", Mr. Reddy added.

Mr. Reddy also promised to take up the issue of enhancing matching grant from the current Rs.5 lakh to each group to Rs.10 lakh with the Reserve Bank of India.

A total of 500 group leaders from groups which were granted loans from Andhra Bank attended the meet. 

District Collector, S K Sultania said that the district administration was proposing to increase loans to women's groups from Rs.60 to Rs.120 crore in view of the good recoveries.

  ANDHRA BANK to launch online trading platform


Andhra Bank will launch an online trading platform next month in association with Religare and IDBI. "The platform is fully ready. It will combine the benefits of current/savings, demant and broking accounts, " Mr. R S Reddy, Chairman and Managing Director, Andhra Bank told newspersons on the sidelines of a customer meet at Sultan Bazar Branch here on Wednesday. The bank has finalised the modalities of mobile banking service in line with the RBI guidelines. The bank would also launch a major marketing campaign to take its technology-driven products to the customers, he added. The bank is taking several initiatives such as setting up separate process centres for small and medium enterprises and retail advances, he said. On credit offtake, Mr. Reddy said the bank's credit growth has not slowed. The bank would take a call on reviewing interest rates in line with the changes in cost of funds, he added. Addressing customers earlier, Mr. Reddy said: "Our objective is to make the bank a financial supermarket."

  Andhra Bank to conduct study on ATM Usage

With the operations at the ATMs becoming part of core business, the Andhra Bank has decided to study the present usage trends before taking up more ATMs, said Andhra Bank Chairman Sri R S Reddy.

Spekaing to reporters here on Thursday, Reddy said that all the banks have provided the facility of making transactions from ATM of any bank to customer of any bank following the directive of RBI. The ATMs are now open to customer of any bank. Though, this has been a great relief to the cutomers, it has to be assessed the usage patterns and business volume before going for the new ones, he said. He said that they would install new ATMs in rural after a study into the latest facility. Reddy said that the bank had been given a permission to open as many as 121 new branches this financial year.

Reddy said that Andhra Bank in association with the Bank of Baroda and the Indian Overseas Bank will launch banking services to clients in Malaysia by March 2010. He said that the bank was also entering into insurance business where a U K based Legal and General Group Plc and the Bank of Baroda would be their joint venture partners. He explained that Andhra Bank had already crossed the Rs.1 lakh crore mark in business showing a growth of 23.6 percent over the previous financial year. He said that they wanted to take the business volume to Rs.1.5 lakh crore by September 2010.
